Please don’t if you care about freedom of speech.

This pad is a censorship device because of a built-in technology called DRM.

They say that DRM means Digital Rights Management but from our point of view DRM means Digital RESTRICTIONS Management because it restricts what you can do with your device: it tells you what applications you can install, what files you can share and where, and other malicious anti-features.

I invite you to sign this petition to ask Steve Jobs to drop all the DRM from the iPad before it hits the market.

Feb 3rd update: For every 5,000 signatures we get, we will send this giant “1984″ postcard to Steve Jobs.

Please help me to share this news.

Link this post on your favourite free social network or microblogging network

Send an email to all your friends about it

Talk about it in your favourite irc channels

Together we can put an end to DRM.

You can also join our campaign against DRM called Defective By Design.

As our society grows more dependent on computers, the software we run is of critical importance to securing the future of a free society. Free software is about having control over the technology we use in our homes, schools and businesses, where computers work for our individual and communal benefit, not for proprietary software companies or governments who might seek to restrict and monitor us.

The Free Software Foundation is working to secure freedom for computer users by promoting the development and use of free (as in freedom) software and documentation — particularly the GNU/Linux operating system — and by campaigning against threats to computer user freedom like Digital Restrictions Management (DRM).

Dear Free Software Supporter,

Tomorrow we mark the end of our year-long celebration of the 25th
anniversary of the GNU Project—a celebration that we kicked off in
September 2008 with a wonderful video from author and comedian Stephen
Fry.

Today, we celebrate the fact that we have passed 25,000 subscribers to
our monthly newsletter, the Free Software Supporter, and we thank the 3,200 individuals who have joined the Free Software Foundation as associate members to fund our
work. You can join their ranks now and become a proud card carrying member:

* As a member use our widget to refer your friends.

I am proud that the FSF has so many dedicated activists and members, who
every day voice their support for our mission and advocate for a free
society.

The free software movement has had an excellent year, and awareness of
the ethical importance of free software is growing. Together, we are
fighting the scourge of proprietary software, software patents, Digital
Restrictions Management, and Treacherous Computing, in an effort to
build a world of free software where we the users are free.

“I could have made money [by joining the proprietary software world],
and perhaps amused myself writing code. But I knew that at the end of my
career, I would look back on years of building walls to divide people,
and feel I had spent my life making the world a worse place.” Richard
Stallman, GNU Project

Please spread the word by linking to this message.
Sincerely,

Peter and the Free Software Foundation team.

Richard
